Africa Data Centres Samrand, Gauteng, South Africa

Africa Data Centres is expanding its Samrand data center in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa, from 10 megawatts of power to 40 megawatts. The site, part of the Africa Data Centres network run by Cassava Technologies, is now listed as operating while the buildout continues. Africa Data Centres bought the campus from Standard Bank in 2020 and broke ground on the expansion on August 30, 2022.

"The construction of the first phase is starting today and will deliver 20MW across eight data halls by 2023," said Tesh Durvasula, then Africa Data Centres' chief executive, at the groundbreaking. He said the next phase would add 10 more megawatts of power by the end of 2025. In August 2024, South Africa executive Angus Hay told TechCentral the facility, originally built for 10 megawatts, would gain another 20 megawatts of power when the upgrade finished in 2025.

Cassava Technologies, the pan-African group that owns Africa Data Centres, runs two data centers in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town. In October 2025 Cassava announced an investment from Stanlib Infrastructure Investments to expand its AI-ready data centers in Johannesburg and Cape Town, after Nvidia delivered 3,000 graphics chips to a Cassava-built South African site in June 2025.
