Core Scientific Calvert City data center, Calvert City, Kentucky

Core Scientific runs a data center in Calvert City, Marshall County, Kentucky, inside the former Gerdau steel rolling mill that closed in 2016. The company announced the site in November 2019 as a large-scale blockchain facility and named the Tennessee Valley Authority and Jackson Purchase Energy as partners in developing its power supply, with TVA's gas turbine plant on Ky. 1523 nearby. The Kentucky Lantern's July 2026 survey of the state's large data centers lists the campus as operating at 150 megawatts since 2019.

Matthew Bishop, the company's chief administrative officer, told the Paducah Sun the site opened with about 30 employees on site and far more contractors, and that reliable electric power was one of the main reasons for choosing Calvert City. Josh Tubbs, president of Kentucky Lake Economic Development, called the project "a significant capital investment in our community." Kevin Turner, then chief executive, said: "We are investing in the infrastructure and software solutions that help our customers maximize the performance of their servers."

Core Scientific now lists Calvert 1, 2 and 3 among the sites where it offers high-density colocation for artificial intelligence and enterprise customers. Riot Platforms runs a second, smaller data center near Calvert City, a 25-megawatt site it bought from another Bitcoin miner in 2024, according to the Kentucky Lantern's survey.
