MERLIN Edged runs a data center in Barcelona's Free Zone in Catalonia, Spain, that hosts the AI cloud company CoreWeave; in its first, roughly 15 megawatt phase, CoreWeave is running 10,224 Nvidia H200 chips, its computer processors for AI work, connected by a fast network called InfiniBand. Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni inaugurated the facility on May 13, 2025 with Albert Tort, the Catalan government's secretary of telecommunications and digital transformation.

"This asset represents the realization of a shared vision: to transform Barcelona into a true digital port in the Mediterranean," Collboni said. MERLIN Edged is a joint venture formed in 2020 by the Spanish real estate company MERLIN Properties and Edged Energy, and also runs data centers in Madrid and Bilbao. "This is our southern Europe region, which gives us the ability to feed any metro in the south within 20 to 30 milliseconds," CoreWeave's international general manager Mike Mattacola told DataCenterDynamics.

The companies say MERLIN Edged data centers use no water for cooling, run on renewable electricity, and are designed to waste very little power, with what the industry calls a power usage effectiveness of 1.15, close to the 1.0 of a perfectly efficient facility. The Barcelona site is part of CoreWeave's plan to spend about $2.2 billion on data center infrastructure across Europe.

A second phase at the site, expected to use Nvidia's newer Blackwell chips, has not started; Mattacola said in 2025 the company would decide on it "a little bit closer to the time when we plan to launch capacity," and no update on that decision has been published since.
