An unnamed company approached Mount Shasta, Siskiyou County, California, about building an AI data center at the former Crystal Geyser bottling plant, but the idea is dead: Mount Shasta City Manager Todd Juhasz told the company the city was not interested, and Siskiyou County supervisors said in July 2026 that nothing was pending before the county. "We are well aware of the community's opposition to that," Siskiyou County Supervisor Ray Haupt said at the board's July meeting, adding: "We have nothing pending before the county or county departments regarding data centers."

The inquiry reached the city's planning director in June, and Juhasz said the company was likely drawn by the property's water rights and a high-producing well: springs fed by the volcanic aquifers around Mount Shasta form the headwaters of the Sacramento River. "We'll hear them out," Juhasz said. "But unless there's some magical thing they do that other data centers don't, I can't imagine this would be good for the community," adding there's "no ROI for the city."

The site has fought this fight before: Crystal Geyser bought it in 2013 to bottle Mount Shasta water and gave up in 2021 after years of opposition led by the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, which quickly spoke out again over water, power, fumes and noise. A petition against a data center there passed 7,500 signatures, and the Mount Shasta Police Department said officials had received death threats over the proposal, even though no one in city government supported it.

The property lies in unincorporated Siskiyou County, so the county holds approval power, and Mount Shasta has begun looking at annexing it, which would give the city more control over development and water. If a data center application is ever filed, it would go to the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors unless the city annexes the land first; no application had been filed as of July 2026.
