Data centers in Siskiyou County, California: 1 project mapped

Siskiyou County's data center scare lasted about two weeks. In June 2026 an unnamed company contacted Mount Shasta's planning director about building an AI data center at the former Crystal Geyser bottling plant, just outside city limits near North Mt. Shasta Boulevard and Ski Village Drive. Crystal Geyser bought the land in 2013 to bottle Mount Shasta spring water and abandoned the plan in 2021 after years of opposition led by the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. The Bay Area firm One Shasta LLC bought the building in 2022, and Shasta Scout reported that the sale listing called the site "ideal for data centers or other uses with high water needs." City Manager Todd Juhasz said the company was likely after the property's water rights and high-producing well. The springs fed by the mountain's volcanic aquifers form the headwaters of the Sacramento River.

Juhasz disclosed the inquiry at a city council meeting and said he would tell the company no. "The idea that we're going to risk a precious commodity for very limited payoff, there's no ROI for the city," he said, estimating about 15 long-term jobs and little local tax revenue. Mayor Casey Glaubman said he received more than 100 emails, many based on inaccurate information. The Winnemem Wintu listed concerns about water, power, fumes and noise, and an online petition circulated. Mount Shasta police said officials had received death threats over the proposal, even though no one in city government supported it. Because the site is in unincorporated county land, the county would decide any application. At the Board of Supervisors meeting in early July, Supervisor Ray Haupt said: "We have nothing pending before the county or county departments regarding data centers." The city is exploring annexing the property to gain control over its future use and water.
