Hut 8 Logan Prairie Data Center, Latham/Laenna Twp, Illinois

Miami-based Hut 8 Corp. wants to build Logan Prairie, a $5 billion, 500 megawatt data center on farmland in Laenna Township near Latham, an unincorporated community in Logan County, Illinois. About 250 people packed a hearing at the Logan County courthouse in Lincoln on January 5, 2026, and most who spoke were against it. The Logan County Board has the final say on the zoning Hut 8 needs, and as of late September 2026 it had not voted.

Sebastian Scassiferro, of Mount Pulaski, told the hearing: "I see farm land turning into asphalt, and I don't like it." Other residents raised concerns about electricity rates, power disruptions, noise, light pollution and the loss of farmland. Rachel Smith, who lives near Latham, said she was glad county officials had slowed the process: "I'm glad to see it looks like there will be a little more transparency."

The county board passed a 60-day moratorium on data center applications on February 24, 2026, then a full 12-month moratorium on May 19. After Hut 8 emailed county officials on June 16 threatening legal action, State's Attorney Bradley Hauge told the board on June 18 that the May moratorium was invalid because it had skipped a required advisory vote and public hearings. The county's zoning office deemed Hut 8's applications complete on June 29.

Hut 8 also tried annexing the site into the village of Latham, which would let it bypass the county board. Village President Theodore Allen said in July that trustees would vote down the plan, and Hut 8 agreed to focus on winning approval at the county level instead, though the company's attorney said on July 28 that the application had not been withdrawn. Village Trustee Ryan Virden, who opposed the annexation, said: "People move out to the rural areas for peace and quiet."

At the county level, officials found technical errors in Hut 8's zoning applications, which Hut 8 disputes, and canceled votes that had been scheduled for August. County Zoning Officer Allan Green said Hut 8 could correct and resubmit its applications for consideration in September 2026 at the earliest; no county vote has taken place since. Hut 8 has promised Latham, a village with annual revenue of $291,000, between $8 million and $11 million a year for 15 years if the project goes forward.
