Sulphur Springs Matrix Data Center Campus, Sulphur Springs, Texas

MSB Global Services broke ground on its Matrix data center campus outside Sulphur Springs, Texas, on June 13, 2025, on the site of a closed coal mine; the plan calls for up to 30 buildings and about 3,000 megawatts of power, built in phases over five years. On June 2, 2026, the city council voted to bring in a new developer to replace MSB Global; Mayor Tyler Law said a press release would follow, but the city has not named the new company.

The land was given to the city by power company Vistra in 2019 with a deed barring it from ever being used to generate or store power, and MSB Global's plan needs about 3,000 megawatts of on-site generation to run. Vistra sued to block construction, and Hopkins County District Judge Dan Moore issued a temporary injunction on February 10, 2026 barring new construction tied to the covenant until trial. The trial was scheduled for September 2026; no result has been published.

"I didn't find out from the city. I found out from a video that MSB Global had uploaded," said resident Jaime Mitchell, who runs a local transparency page. "This isn't just a data center. This is potentially one of the largest in the world. It's 30 buildings the size of Costco." The council added $1.2 million to its legal budget for the two lawsuits on May 5, 2026, on top of about $230,000 already spent; Mayor Law said the spending would not raise taxes.

In December 2025 court filings, Vistra's lawyers asked that City Attorney Nate Smith be removed from the case, citing his past relationship with MSB Global's vice president of project development, Ganna Halvorsen; the city and MSB Global said the relationship had ended before the company had any dealings with Sulphur Springs. Residents held a national day of protest against data centers in downtown Sulphur Springs on July 18, 2026.
