Townsite Solar 2, a subsidiary of Skylar Energy Resources, walked away from its plan to build a data center on Boulder City-owned land and instead won federal approval to build on nearby Bureau of Land Management land in the Eldorado Valley, in Clark County, Nevada. The company withdrew its city application on July 6, 2026, after a planning board vote against it, and BLM approved a switch of its 2023 solar-and-battery permit to a two-building data center campus with a peak demand of 167 megawatts. The Interior Department's Board of Land Appeals halted the project on September 1, 2026, after Boulder City and environmental groups appealed.

Boulder City had projected about $1.46 million a year in added lease revenue from the data center against $611,000 for the solar project it would have replaced, since land lease revenue funds more than a third of the city's budget. "This feels so unprecedented for us to have a project placed in our city without the chance to weigh in," said city spokesperson Lisa LaPlante. The city council and a citizens' group aided by the Sierra Club and the Center for Biological Diversity are pursuing separate appeals of BLM's approval.

The Board of Land Appeals will decide whether to keep the project on hold while it reviews the case; if it does not, opponents said they could seek a stay in court.
