Riot Platforms made its name mining bitcoin in Texas and is now turning its campuses into AI data centers. In August 2026 it disclosed a 20-year, $9.1 billion lease at its Rockdale campus in Milam County to supply 191 megawatts of computing capacity to what it called a "leading frontier AI lab"; Bloomberg identified the tenant as Anthropic. Riot said it would deliver 96 megawatts by December 2027 and all 191 by June 2028, and chief executive Jason Les said that deal and a smaller lease with AMD gave Riot about $9.8 billion in contracted data center revenue. Rockdale, on the site of a former Alcoa aluminum smelter, is Riot's flagship, with 700 megawatts of developed capacity. In January 2026 Riot bought the 200 acres under it for $96 million, paid for by selling about 1,080 bitcoin, and signed AMD for an initial 25 megawatts. Greenpeace has called Rockdale the most energy and carbon-intensive bitcoin mine in the United States.
Its other Texas campus, on FM 709 outside Corsicana in Navarro County, was energized in April 2024 and is meant to reach 1 gigawatt. In 2026 Riot filed to add Project Ditto, a $400 million, 335,430-square-foot data center building there, running from April 2026 to May 2028. The site has been fought over: in March 2024 Navarro County commissioners declined to act on a tax abatement for a $640 million expansion after residents flooded them with emails, texts and visits opposing it, and opponents organized as the Texas Coalition Against Cryptomining. The facility draws about 1.5 million gallons of water a day at peak summer use, The Nation reported.
Texas has since tightened the terms. On August 3, 2026 Governor Greg Abbott ordered the Public Utility Commission and ERCOT to pause approvals for data centers seeking new grid connections until regulators audit their water use, power demand and tax incentives, and on August 18 his office said Riot had committed to comply with his standards, including paying for its own grid upgrades. In Kentucky, Riot owns a 60-megawatt mining center outside Paducah, bought with Block Mining in 2024, and said in May 2026 it would study pairing future data centers there with small nuclear reactors from Terrestrial Energy; no timeline has been released.
