Google is building a 1-gigawatt AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam, a $15 billion investment through its Indian subsidiary Raiden Infotech, developed with AdaniConneX and Airtel's Nxtra. It spans three campuses, at Tarluvada, Adavivaram and Rambilli, on 480 acres the state allocated in October 2025, and ground was broken on April 28, 2026. In May 2026 the state investment board also cleared a Reliance Industries data center in Visakhapatnam worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore.
Water is the flashpoint. The city gets about 410 million liters of water a day against roughly 480 million needed, and demonstrators, including children, have marched with banners reading "We cannot drink DATA." The state High Court has ordered the government to answer the group Jal Biradari's claim that the project will strain a nearby reservoir, and petitioners point to the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, home to leopards and pangolins, about 860 meters from one site. The state says the project meets legal buffer distances; Google says it will use air cooling to limit water use and install sound dampening.
The Human Rights Forum calls the hub "a looming environmental and economic disaster" and says the state's incentives to Google add up to Rs 22,002 crore over 20 years. It reports farmers being pressed by middlemen to give up land "voluntarily." In Tarluvada, Relli Ramakrishna told Jacobin she has not walked to the cashew and mango plot she farmed most of her life since it was taken about six months ago. "The farm was my work," she said.
