India's biggest data center project is Google's $15 billion, 1-gigawatt AI hub around Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, built with AdaniConneX and Airtel's Nxtra. Google broke ground on April 28, 2026 at Tarluvada, a village of about 3,000 people in Anandapuram mandal, which holds the main 266.6-acre site; two more sites are planned on 174.8 acres at Rambilli in Anakapalli district and 160 acres at Adavivaram-Mudasarlova. The project is to be built over five years.
Most of the Tarluvada land was farmed. About 204 of the 308.657 acres the state allotted to Google were assigned or unrecorded land held by farmers. After farmers asked, the state raised compensation to ₹20 lakh an acre for assigned land and ₹10 lakh for unrecorded land, plus 3 cents of house-site land per family; farmers asked for 5 cents. People in the area worry about groundwater in a region that is already short of water, Business Standard reported.
The other fight is in Thane, outside Mumbai, where Amazon Web Services plans a campus of about 53 acres at Balkum and Majiwada. Residents began protesting when they learned it had been classed as an essential service, giving it priority for water and power, and formed a campaign, Wake Up Thanekar, to demand public consultation. Answering local MP Naresh Mhaske's call to halt construction, Amazon said on July 8, 2026 that its tree felling had a city permit and the site would not use drinking water for cooling.
