Hyderabad is where Telangana's big data centers are going. In July 2026 Amazon Web Services began building a campus on 202 acres at Bharat Future City and 98 acres at Chandanvelly, with the first phase due within two years and about Rs 60,000 crore planned over ten years. Microsoft opened its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad on August 6, 2026, and the state has backed a Rs 70,000 crore AI data center on 264 acres by HyperVault, a TCS subsidiary, due by June 2028.
The TCS project was challenged in the Assembly on September 11, 2026. BJP legislator Palvai Harish Babu said it would create only 7,000 direct jobs while needing round-the-clock power and large amounts of water, and called for a debate. IT Minister D Sridhar Babu agreed data centers are seen as power and water guzzlers but said the state "will ensure that power supply to domestic, irrigation and industrial sectors is not affected."
The longest local fight is at Mekaguda, a dairy village of about 1,000 people where Microsoft bought 22 acres in 2022. In July 2023 residents sued Microsoft and 35 others in the Telangana High Court, saying it fenced off about 380 meters of a communal cart-way and dumped waste into Tungakunta lake. "These big companies think they can enter small villages like ours, take our land, and destroy it," said village head Chinthalapally Pandu Ranga Reddy. Microsoft says it has the permits it needs; as of September 10, 2025, the case was still pending.
