The Jerusalem District's best-known data center is Oracle's: Israel's first public cloud region, opened in October 2021 in a bunker built by Bynet Data Communications beneath a 17-story building in the Har Hotzvim tech hub, four floors deep to 50 meters. Beit Shemesh is where new building is going. Amazon Web Services runs one of its three Israeli cloud zones at the Har Tov industrial park near the town, and Mega Or is building a 58-megawatt data center there for the AI cloud company Nebius, due in stages from the third quarter of 2026 into early 2027.
"This facility ... can withstand a rocket direct hit, a missile direct hit, or even a car bomb," Oracle's Israel country manager, Eran Feigenbaum, said of the Jerusalem bunker. Techtonic announced a 16-megawatt underground data center in Beit Shemesh in February 2023. In June 2026 the drone maker VisionWave signed a term sheet for a hardened, underground data center in Beit Shemesh, 10.5 megawatts in its first phase, then dropped the plan, citing the national freeze on grid connections.
That freeze, ordered by the Electricity Authority in July 2026, stops processing grid connections for data centers of 8 megawatts or more for 140 days, until early December. Requests had reached about 27,000 megawatts, three times Israel's average use of about 9,000. By the end of the freeze, the authority, the Energy Ministry and the grid operator Noga are to set rules deciding which projects can connect.
