Oslo has two data centers in the news. Bulk Infrastructure's OS-IX, opened in 2014 in a former printing press 5.3 kilometers from Oslo Central Station, offers 14 megawatts of power and connections to more than 60 networks. At Ulven, a data center that Klima Oslo names as Vaultica's (EnergiAktuelt named STACK in 2023) sends its waste heat into the city's district heating network.
The Ulven plant, opened by the city heating company Hafslund Oslo Celsio in November 2021, was the first of its kind in Norway. Four heat pumps take 15-degree water from the data center's cooling system and deliver 5 megawatts of heat, enough for about 5,000 apartments. "If we hadn't taken out this heat, it would have gone straight out over the roof," project leader Trond Berntsen said (translated from Norwegian).
New large data centers face a harder limit. The national grid company Statnett has told the local grid operator Elvia that there is no room in the transmission grid for large new users in Oslo, Akershus and Østfold until 2030 to 2035.
