Data centers in Incheon: 1 project mapped
Princeton Digital Group is building its first South Korean data center, SE1, in Incheon's Bupyeong district: a nine-story, 48-megawatt building on 11,000 square meters, a $700 million project due to open in early 2028. The real estate firm ESR, which calls the building KR1, is putting up the shell with Wide Creek Asset Management and said in November 2025 that construction was starting that week. PDG says the site's power is fully contracted.
Bupyeong has been through one data center fight already. SEL2, a data center built by SK ecoplant and Singapore's Digital Edge at 422 Cheongcheon-dong in the Bupyeong national industrial complex, needed a 1,985-meter underground high-voltage line from KEPCO's Galsan substation. When residents of the Ian apartments in Galsan-dong learned in August 2023 that the route passed about 200 meters away, the district halted 600 meters of the work. Residents wanted the line buried deeper than the 3 meters offered and radiation monitors at three spots.
The district let digging resume in February 2024, telling the Kyeongin Ilbo it would probably lose if the developer sued for tens of billions of won in damages. SEL2 opened in August 2024, with a second phase due to start in 2025. KEPCO's planned New Bupyeong converter station in Galsan-dong, a roughly 250 billion won project meant to relieve overloads on Incheon's grid, was turned down by the district's building committee from 2022 through 2024 over residents' objections. In March 2025 KEPCO said it could not yet set a start date.
