Data centers in Tazewell County, Illinois: 1 project mapped
Tazewell County has no data center proposal before it, and the county is not accepting any until it finishes writing rules for them. The one plan that got furthest, Western Hospitality Partners' campus on about 320 acres of the city-owned Lutticken Farm in Pekin, between Illinois Route 98 and Sheridan Road, is dead: Mayor Mary Burress dropped it on March 9, 2026, and the developer ended its purchase agreement on May 5.
Opposition spread fast; a Facebook group against the project grew from about 2,000 members in January to more than 6,200 by May. Burress told a packed council meeting that "it has become clear that, at this time, it's not the right project for Pekin," and the room broke into applause. In June, residents in "NO Data Center" T-shirts filled a North Pekin village meeting over the rezoning of the empty AMC theater at 1124 Edgewater Drive. Its owner, Jeff Agan, said: "It won't be a data center."

In May the County Board, with one member voting no, changed its zoning code so that any use not explicitly allowed is prohibited, and told the zoning office to refuse data center petitions until an ordinance is written. "What we don't want is to shove a data center in your backyard," said Russ Crawford, who chairs the Land Use Committee and has pointed to protecting the Mahomet Aquifer. A first draft in August would allow data centers only on industrial land outside towns, with special use permits and noise studies.
The draft still needs a public hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals and a County Board vote. Board member Eric Stahl wants a three- or six-month moratorium in the meantime: "Everything that has been brought to us has been negative." Opponents say they are now working to stop another planned facility in Delavan.
