Data centers in Mason County, Kentucky: 1 project mapped
Mason County has rezoned about 2,000 acres of land outside Maysville for a data center whose owner nobody in public will name. The Mason County Fiscal Court gave final approval on May 22, 2026, to rezone 28 properties around Big Pond Pike for a hyperscale campus that officials say could reach 2.2 gigawatts of power, WEKU and WVXU reported. County officials and landowners have signed non-disclosure agreements with what they describe as a Fortune 50 company; East Kentucky Power Cooperative, which runs the nearby Spurlock Power Plant, first approached local officials about whether Maysville could fit the project, the county's economic development director, Tyler McHugh, told LEX 18. Separately, in February 2026 the county adopted zoning text amendments for data centers on the Planning Commission's recommendation; it has not imposed a moratorium.
Judge-Executive Owen McNeill says the county needs the tax base. "If, at a minimum, these guys bring in 400 high-paying, career-sustaining, family-sustaining jobs, that makes them the largest employer in Northeastern Kentucky, easily," he told WVXU, adding that the county cannot stay dependent on agriculture. Opponents have organized: a petition had more than 500 confirmed county signatures, and the group We Are Mason County, KY, has sued the county and its planning commission, arguing the comprehensive plan does not address data centers. Its attorney, Hank Graddy, asked where the benefit to the county was "in writing." Max Moran, a livestock farmer who helped file the suit, said the county already has industrial land and that neighbors did not sign on to live beside diesel backup generators.

Some of the cost is already falling on individuals. Lisa Helphanstine and about two dozen neighbors, most of them elderly, are being moved out of the Meadowland Village Mobile Home Park, which its owners agreed to sell for the project; she said the $50,000 in relocation money will not cover the cost. "I'm so, so stressed out," she told WVXU. University of Kentucky economist Alison Davis said data centers' local economic impacts often "aren't huge," and that whether this one pays off depends on whether the company pays for its own infrastructure and full taxes from day one.
The company has final say on whether to build, and the lawsuit against the county is pending.
