Data centers in Hampden County, Massachusetts: 1 project mapped

Servistar Realties plans what would be New England's largest data center at 199 Servistar Industrial Way in Westfield: 10 three-story buildings, 2.7 million square feet in all, drawing up to 274 megawatts of power when finished. The City Council approved it 9-3 in 2021 with millions of dollars in property tax breaks. In July 2026 the same council voted unanimously for a one-year moratorium on any more data centers, which does not stop Servistar because it already has its approvals.

Water is the main fear. City Councilor Kristen Mello, who led the push for the moratorium, is worried about the Barnes Aquifer that supplies the region: "We cannot keep pretending that our choices do not have consequences." Melissa Glynn, whose family lives about 1,000 feet from the site, said the project "would put me over the edge." Co-owner Paul Corey says the campus will use closed-loop cooling, need at most 10,000 gallons of water a day, and run its backup generators on natural gas, not diesel.

The city-owned Westfield Gas & Electric says Servistar will pay for a dedicated substation, which will take about five years to set up, and that other customers' rates should not rise. Some opponents told The Boston Globe they hope to get the 2021 approvals overturned. In neighboring Holyoke, the City Council voted 9-4 in June 2026 to ban new data centers.
