Servistar Data Center, Westfield, Massachusetts

The data center proposed at 199 Servistar Industrial Way in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, was never built. An investigation published December 30, 2025 by The Shoestring found a mailed copy of the project's special permit was refused delivery and there has been no contact between developer Servistar Realties and the city since October 2021. Servistar's limited liability company was administratively dissolved by the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office at the end of 2024 for failing to file annual reports two years running.

Servistar Realties had proposed ten buildings, each 86 feet tall, totaling 2.7 million square feet on 156 acres assembled from 16 separate lots. It would have drawn more than 300 megawatts, roughly ten times the output of the largest data center then operating in Massachusetts and four to five times Westfield's own peak demand of 85 megawatts, Westfield Gas and Electric said.

The three equal members of Servistar Realties were Erik Bartone, Paul Corey and Connecticut state senator John Fonfara; in March 2025 Fonfara told CT Insider the project had been dead for two years for lack of financing and that he was no longer involved. Five months later the president of Westmass Area Development Corporation, the project's consultant, told NBC Boston that predevelopment could start within six months, an account The Shoestring found no permit or filing to support.

Westfield had already given the project a great deal: in October 2021 the city council approved a 40-year payment in lieu of taxes agreement worth $352 million and a special permit, with the tax clock not starting until the buildings opened. At-large council member Kristen Mello voted against, calling the project as proposed "an environmental nightmare."

Former council member Dave Flaherty, who also voted against, called the tax deal "ridiculous, way more than any other business, in both dollars and percentage," and said it was put to the council as take it or leave it. City planner Jay Vinskey said of the project's status: "I don't have any insight on the status of this."

The 156 acres sit on the Barnes Aquifer, hold habitat for endangered turtles, and are crossed by two 115,000-volt Eversource transmission lines. Tom Flaherty, general manager of Westfield Gas and Electric, said rejoining the queue for grid service with ISO New England would take at least two years, and that the substations serving the area date from 1975 and run at 90 percent of capacity. No building permit had been pulled, against a deadline of October 2026.
