Data centers in Kent County, Michigan: 4 projects mapped
Kent County's most advanced data center proposal is Microsoft's, a planned $1 billion, 100-megawatt campus on 237 acres beside Interstate 96 in Lowell Charter Township, a community of about 6,500 people 20 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. A local business owner showed up to a December 2025 planning hearing in a Mr. Peanut costume holding a sign that said "This is nuts," and Microsoft introduced itself to the township in a January 7, 2026 letter, writing that "the community would like more information about the proposal." On May 18, 2026 the township board voted 2-5 against a moratorium on data centers and later formed a committee to draft its own ordinance.
West of Lowell, Microsoft also wants to rezone five parcels totaling about 104 acres off Patterson Avenue SE in Gaines Township, next to 320 acres it already owns there; this is the project listed in the table under Caledonia, its mailing address. Nearly 600 people packed a planning commission hearing at South Christian High School on April 15, 2026, and after hours of comment the commission tabled the rezoning; no decision has been made since. Microsoft's draft agreement offers a 65-decibel noise cap at property lines, a 150-foot building setback and a landscaped berm.

In the county's north end, Solon Township adopted a six-month moratorium on data centers in February 2026, and its planning commission has since tabled a proposed ordinance five times. "We want to reduce that down to 200 acres in the township," said Katie Valtchev of Stop Solon Township Data Center, of a draft that would allow 800 acres of data center development.
The county's other two tracked sites are Switch's Pyramid Campus in Grand Rapids, which is already operating, and Project Peninsula in Cedar Springs, a proposed site with no company or power figure reported yet. Gaines Township has not yet rescheduled a vote on the Microsoft rezoning, and Solon Township's planning commission is expected to take up its data center ordinance again next.
