Data centers in Livingston County, Michigan: 1 project mapped

Meta was behind a $1 billion data center proposed for 1,077 acres of farmland in Howell Township, developed through Stantec Consulting Michigan and landowner Randee LLC, trustee Bob Wilson told Michigan Advance and MLive in November 2025. The Van Gilder family, which owns the land, withdrew its rezoning request in December 2025, the night before a scheduled hearing, after the township and county planning commissions both voted against it. Township officials had adopted a six-month moratorium on new site plans that November, though it did not cover rezoning.

Residents organized as Stop the Data Centers Livingston County and gathered more than 3,700 petition signatures. Hundreds packed a seven-hour township meeting on September 23, 2025, and emails later showed officials had signed nondisclosure agreements with the developers. Ryan Van Gilder wrote to officials from a DTE Energy-arranged bus tour of Ohio data centers, "If your meeting gets postponed on Sept 23 you guys are dead." The family's withdrawal statement said it would "honor the current moratorium," but resident Breanne Green, who obtained the emails, said, "This is far from over."

Tyrone Township, elsewhere in the county, has had its own moratorium on new data centers in place since December 2, 2025, with no end date set. Howell Township's moratorium was due to run about six months from November 2025; no result on new township rules, or on whether the Van Gilder family has resubmitted its rezoning request, has been published.
