Data centers in Wayne County, Michigan: 4 projects mapped

Panattoni's Project Cannoli, a roughly 1-gigawatt data center campus on already industrial-zoned land at I-94 and Haggerty Road in Van Buren Township, got preliminary site plan approval on February 11, 2026, and a substation to serve it got preliminary approval on May 14. Google and DTE Energy announced in March 2026 that Google would be the tenant, with DTE filing the power contracts as a contested case at the Public Service Commission rather than fast-tracking them as it did for the Saline Township project. More than 1,500 people have signed a petition against it.

Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara said the pushback "caused us to really pump the brakes when all of a sudden we had 200 people screaming, 'no data centers, we're all going to die,'" but also called the project potentially "life-changing" for local businesses and schools. In Allen Park, the Planning Commission voted 7-2 in June 2026 to reject Solstice Data's 26-megawatt data center near Melvindale High School, citing an incomplete sound study, and recommended a six-month moratorium.

Detroit has no data center ordinance; its City Council recommended a two-year moratorium that Mayor Mary Sheffield has not adopted, and the City Planning Commission is still drafting rules. Wayne County's other data centers are smaller: Equinix runs a colocation facility in Allen Park, and US Signal is expanding a 2-megawatt data center in Belleville. What comes next: the Public Service Commission's decision on DTE's Google contracts, and Van Buren Township's final approval of Cannoli's site plan.
