Data centers in Macomb County, Michigan: 1 project mapped

San Francisco-based Prologis spent six months trying to rezone 312 acres of farmland in Washington Township for the 32 Mile Road Technical Campus, a data center site near the Romeo State Airport, then withdrew its application on May 19, 2026. Prologis said it would wait until the township adopts data center rules before reapplying. The township board passed a six-month moratorium on new applications on May 20, in effect from May 23 to November 23, 2026.

Residents packed the first planning commission hearing in December 2025, and the commission postponed a decision three more times while the township rewrote its zoning. Township attorney Robert Seibert warned of a "strong possibility" of lawsuits from developers or neighbors, and a noise consultant urged penalties for the tonal and impulsive sounds a data center can make. Township Engineer Mike Kozak said such a user likely could not connect to the township's water and sewer system.

Three other Macomb County communities have also paused new data centers: Sterling Heights, the Village of Romeo and Armada Township. Township Clerk Audrey Brown, who proposed Washington Township's moratorium, said, "The moratorium will give our community time to put legal safeguards in place."
