Data centers in Nodaway County, Missouri: 1 project mapped

Nodaway County has no zoning, so commissioners say they had little say over the biggest project ever proposed there. Chicago-based ReLoad pitched a data center in December 2025; after New Jersey's Scale Microgrids bought it in February 2026, it became White Cloud Acres, a hyperscale AI data center and a 600-megawatt natural gas plant on more than 500 acres south of Maryville. The county has put the cost at $6.3 billion, and the company has not named an operator or bought the land.

The company's account has shifted. Commissioners first described an off-grid gas plant; by June, Scale said the electric grid would be the data center's main power source, with the plant running two to four hours a day on average. Early estimates of a million gallons of water a day gave way to about 70,000 gallons, mostly for the power plant, drawn from Maryville's treated wastewater. Scale expects construction to start in early 2027 and estimates 100 to 130 jobs.

About 200 people showed up when the group Nodaway Says No organized against the project. "This is not a fight over advancing technology. This is a fight over power and who should and should not have it," said organizer Holly Caviness. On July 21 the county commission unanimously imposed a six-month moratorium, extendable by six months. Presiding Commissioner Bill Walker said he wants the end user named first; Scale's attorney said none has been chosen.
