Google Project Mica data center, Clay County, Missouri

Google is building Project Mica, a data center campus of five buildings on nearly 500 acres at the northeast corner of Interstate 435 and U.S. Highway 169 in Kansas City's Northland, in Clay County, Missouri. Google confirmed in February 2026 that it is behind the project, at 12701 N Arrowhead Trafficway. Construction is already underway, Google said.

The campus would total 1.56 million square feet and draw nearly 700 megawatts at full build-out, supplied by the adjacent Nashua Power Station and on-site substations, according to Port KC. Port KC authorized up to $10 billion in taxable revenue bonds for the project in July 2025, with a 25-year, 75% property tax exemption and full exemption from local and state sales taxes on construction materials and equipment. In return Google committed $1.5 million upfront to the nearby Smithville School District and $250,000 to the Northland Career Center. Google's Trystine Payfer declined to give a completion date but said its data centers usually take 18 to 24 months to build. The site was first marketed by Diode Ventures in 2023 as the Rocky Branch Creek Technology Park; QTS had been set to develop there before pulling out over power timelines.

Power is the main public question. Google says it will cover the full energy costs of powering both of its Kansas City campuses, and it is the first customer to qualify for Evergy's Large Load Power Tariff, approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission in November 2025, which requires long-term contracts, direct cost recovery and a premium rate for users of 75 megawatts or more. Residents across the region have raised the tax breaks and possible effects on utility bills, KCUR reported. Platte County Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker has criticized Port KC's tax breaks for the separate Project Kestrel campus near KCI: "Port KC has no obligation to tell us anything, and we're just left guessing."

Mica is Google's second campus in the Northland; its first, a $1 billion project near Worlds of Fun, broke ground in March 2024 and is still under construction. Meta's Northland campus is operating, and a $100 billion campus called Project Kestrel is proposed near Kansas City International Airport. Kestrel would have six data centers on 379 acres, with a 35-year tax abatement from Port KC.

The main public decisions on Mica have been made: Port KC granted the bonds and tax breaks, and the Missouri Public Service Commission approved the Evergy tariff under which it will buy power; the finish date is up to Google.
