Data centers in Missouri: 33 projects mapped
Missouri's largest data center projects are on an Interstate 70 megasite near New Florence in Montgomery County, where Amazon Data Services and Google are building on nearly 2,000 acres. Amazon's project is north of the highway; Google announced a $15 billion data center south of it in May 2026. Nine towns and counties have paused or banned new data centers, and the next pause to run out is Springfield's 120-day moratorium on October 27.
Montgomery County commissioners approved tax breaks for Amazon in December 2025. The county's own analysis gives Amazon personal property tax exemptions of 75% to 95% from 2028 to 2052, worth $244 million to $982 million, and for Google commissioners planned a 70% break on servers and equipment in return for $10 million a year for 20 years. Residents sued the commission in February under the Sunshine Law over notice of meetings. When residents asked in May why the projects never went to a public vote, Presiding Commissioner Ryan Poston said, "That's not how this works."

Elsewhere, residents have won. The St. Charles City Council voted 7-1 in May to make its one-year moratorium permanent, effectively banning large data centers in the city, after CRG Cumulus withdrew a $1 billion proposal off Highway 370. Festus voters removed four council members in April after the council approved a data center. In Kansas City, the plan commission voted 6-0 on August 5 against a 20-story data center on a historic downtown building after 55 people testified and 475 letters came in against it.
Power bills are the other fight. Ameren Missouri has asked the Public Service Commission for about $343 million more a year, roughly $13 a month for a typical household, while projecting sales to rise more than 60% in five years on new large users such as data centers. State Rep. Brad Christ asked the commission on September 14 to reject the increase: "I get the same bill my neighbors do." The commission is still reviewing the case, file ER-2026-0291, and is taking public comments.
