Data centers in Clay County, Missouri: 4 projects mapped

Google is building two data center campuses in Kansas City's Northland in Clay County. Its first, a $1 billion project at the Hunt Midwest Business Center east of Interstate 435 near Worlds of Fun, broke ground in March 2024 and is still under construction. The second, Project Mica, is five buildings on nearly 500 acres at 12701 N. Arrowhead Trafficway, northeast of the I-435 and U.S. 169 interchange near Smithville; Google confirmed it was behind Mica in February 2026 and said its data centers usually take 18 to 24 months to build.

Mica came with large tax breaks. In July 2025 Port KC authorized up to $10 billion in revenue bonds, a 25-year, 75% property tax exemption and a full sales tax exemption on construction materials and equipment. Google paid $1.5 million up front to the Smithville School District and $250,000 to the Northland Career Center. Evergy says Google is the first customer on its new rate for very large users, which requires them to pay the full cost of serving them; Google says it "will cover the full energy costs" of both campuses.

Meta's $1 billion Kansas City data center, in the Golden Plains Technology Park at Northwest 128th Street and U.S. 169 on the Clay-Platte county line, has been running since August 2025. In Liberty, city officials voted on March 23, 2026 to approve $1.4 billion in bonds and $202.7 million in tax abatements over 25 years for Metrobloks, a Los Angeles company, to build three buildings totaling 568,800 square feet on Old Hughes Road. The state says the Liberty project will create 30 jobs.
