Data centers in Nebraska: 10 projects mapped
Google runs data centers in Papillion, Omaha and Lincoln, and documents shared at a private public-power meeting in January show it is considering a far larger one somewhere in southeast Nebraska, needing 1,000 to 3,000 megawatts of power, the Flatwater Free Press reported. No site has been announced. The Omaha energy developer Tenaska, named in the documents as the project's power supplier, has optioned land in Gage, Lancaster, Cass and Otoe counties. The nearest decision is in Hallam, where the village board votes October 5 on a 35-megawatt data center at Monolith's plant.
The documents describe a privately built gas plant that could produce more than twice the output of the state's largest power plant. Lawmakers this year, at Governor Jim Pillen's request, allowed private plants serving a single large customer to connect to public power grids; Tenaska's chief executive testified for the bill. Google and Tenaska did not answer questions. A separate new law requires data centers to report their owners, size, location, power and water use each year.

Rural counties are moving first. Otoe County's board voted on May 19 to suspend permits for new data centers for up to a year while it updates its rules. "We needed regulations on the books prior to a data center coming to this county," resident Wynee Benedict said. In Gage County, the planning commission voted unanimously on June 16 for an 18-month moratorium after a four-hour hearing in Beatrice, and sent it to the county board. Broken Bow's city council passed a six-month moratorium on July 14.
In Hallam, south of Lincoln, Monolith and its partner Crusoe want to add the data center to Monolith's carbon black plant, and the planning commission recommended approval on September 16 after residents raised water and noise concerns. Another developer, Stark Power, has bought options on more than 1,400 acres outside the village.
