Data centers in Niagara County, New York: 7 projects mapped
Niagara County's largest data center is TeraWulf's Lake Mariner campus in Somerset, near Barker, on the site of a former coal-fired power plant, where AI buildings leased to Core42 and Fluidstack are going up beside five crypto-mining buildings. In October 2025 the Somerset planning board and town board unanimously approved two more AI buildings on 61 acres, after two on 30 acres were approved that September. In Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls Redevelopment's planned $1.5 billion digital campus cleared a legal hurdle in June 2026, though no start date for work has been set.
Lake Mariner has 750 megawatts of power allocated from NYSEG and the New York Power Authority, 90 percent of it from hydropower. The cooling fans on the AI buildings are rated at 45 decibels, quieter than the crypto buildings, and Town Supervisor Jeffrey Dewart said staffing could grow from 52 full-time workers to 150. There would be no room for further expansion once these buildings are finished.

The Niagara Falls deal settled eminent domain litigation over land on Falls Street near the Seneca Niagara Casino and gave the city 10 acres for Centennial Park and an event center. The council meeting was heated. "These machines require and contaminate a lot of water, and once it's gone, we don't get it back," one speaker said. Mayor Rob Restaino said: "Last night wasn't the approval of a data center, last night was the approval of an agreement between two parties in litigation."
Towns are writing their own rules. North Tonawanda's moratorium has stopped DigiPower X from turning its Erie Avenue crypto mine into an AI data center with a new 80,000-square-foot building. In July 2026 the Niagara County Planning Board backed proposed moratoriums in the Town of Lockport, for 18 months, and Cambria, for nine months; the Town of Lewiston adopted an 18-month moratorium earlier in 2026. The Lockport and Cambria town boards make the final decision.
