Data centers in New York: 35 projects mapped

New York has stopped issuing state environmental permits for new data centers that can use 50 megawatts of power or more. Gov. Kathy Hochul's Executive Order 62, signed July 14, holds them for about a year while the state studies what these projects do to the grid, water and air. Smaller projects, and those that need only local approvals, still go through town boards.

The biggest test is in Massena, in St. Lawrence County, where North Country Collocation Services wants to build a 1.5 million-square-foot campus near the St. Lawrence River that would use about 400 megawatts from the New York Power Authority. The company says the state pause does not cover it. On September 16 the town board voted 3-2 against a six-month local moratorium, with Supervisor Raymond Lancto and Kristy Baker in the minority. "We need a moratorium," said Marina Johnson Zafiris of Akwesasne, whose group, Mohawks United in Safety and Health, leads the opposition.
