Data centers in Yates County, New York: 1 project mapped
Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, until July 2026 called Greenidge Generation, plans to turn its gas-fired power plant on Seneca Lake just south of Dresden, in the Town of Torrey, into a large AI data center. The plant has mined bitcoin with its own power since 2019. Vulcan has filed no plans or applications with the town, but it has asked the state grid operator for two connections, of 60 and 200 megawatts, and told investors in August it expects expansion at Seneca Lake by the third quarter of 2027.
Neighbors worry most about the lake. The plant is allowed to draw 139 million gallons a day from Seneca Lake for cooling and averaged 89 million gallons a day in 2024. "My biggest concern is that they're going to be requesting even more water when the data center is up and running," said Dresden resident Stevan Ramirez. Karin Critchlow, whose family has owned land beside the lake for more than 70 years, says the noise already wakes her at two in the morning: "It sounds like there was a truck coming down the back road."

At an August town meeting, Vulcan president Dale Irwin promised more public outreach and "no change to the lake," and said "99% of water" goes back to Seneca Lake with "minimal temperature change." He has raised closed-loop cooling, which local environmentalists support. Torrey highway superintendent Tim Chambers said he caught fish there 40 years ago and still does. Seneca Lake Guardian estimates a conversion could triple the plant's 104 megawatts.
Bigger equipment would also need a change to the plant's state air permit, which Vulcan won back in a 2025 settlement with the Department of Environmental Conservation after years in court. The Town of Torrey, with about 1,300 people, and the DEC are where the plan will be decided.
