Data centers in Montgomery County, Ohio: 1 project mapped

Montgomery County has one small data center and a string of local governments racing to write rules before a big one arrives. The existing site is Iron Mountain's OHS-1 in Miamisburg, which the company describes as a 44,000-square-foot, 1.4MW facility on a 3.5-acre campus, serving Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis.

What worries Miamisburg is a closed power plant. On September 1, 2026 the city council voted 6-0 for a nine-month moratorium on data centers, citing community concern about a possible large-scale data center at the former DP&L Hutchings Power Station, the city said. The plant closed in 2013 and was bought in 2021 by Frontier Industrial Corp., a Buffalo, New York developer. City leaders stressed there is no proposal, but WHIO reported that developers are marketing the old plant as a possible site; they told the station it was too soon to say whether a data center would go there and that manufacturing and energy firms were also interested. "We realized we really aren't prepared for any type of a project like that. We don't have any development regulations that would accommodate something like that," City Manager Chris Fine said. Resident Jana Vedantam said she was working to put a charter amendment limiting the size of data centers on the ballot.

Dayton moved first. On April 22, 2026 the Dayton City Commission approved a 180-day moratorium on applications for large data centers, while the city worked on zoning amendments that would make data centers a prohibited use, the Dayton Daily News reported. "Current zoning regulations do not properly account for data centers, and the impact they may have on nearby properties," planning director Steven Gondol wrote. The moratorium did not touch projects already permitted or pending. Lumen, formerly CenturyLink, already owns three smaller spaces in the city. On June 25 the commission passed the zoning amendments, permanently banning new data centers in Dayton; existing small centers are unaffected. Washington Township has adopted a 360-day moratorium of its own, even though its development director said no one had approached it. Franklin resident Linda Moodie has been gathering signatures in Miamisburg and Centerville for Ohio Residents for Responsible Development, which seeks a statewide constitutional amendment limiting data centers' power use.
