Data centers in Hale County, Texas: 1 project mapped

Hale County's data center activity is around Abernathy, a small city on Interstate 27 about 22 miles north of Lubbock that straddles the Hale-Lubbock county line. The largest project is Aligned Data Centers' Project Caprock, a 540-megawatt campus on 313 acres off I-27 and FM 54 north of town; Aligned broke ground in April 2026 with plans for six buildings totaling 1.65 million square feet, the first due in early 2027, Data Center Dynamics reported.

At a February 26 meeting, Aligned executive vice president David Robinson told residents the company owns and operates its sites rather than selling them. Mayor Harold Bufe said, "I own a home in Abernathy, we are not going to do anything that's going to make our home worthless, we are not going to jeopardize us to not have drinking water." Aligned says it is paying for its own dedicated electrical infrastructure with Xcel Energy and will use closed-loop liquid cooling. City Manager Julie Arrington called the campus "a transformative moment for our city's economic future."

A second, separate project is also planned in Abernathy: in October 2025 TeraWulf and the AI cloud company Fluidstack formed a joint venture for 168 megawatts of computing load on a new 120-acre campus there, due in the second half of 2026, with Google backing about $1.3 billion of Fluidstack's lease obligations.
