Oldham County's one large data center is a Bitcoin mine outside Vega, the county seat, in the Texas Panhandle. Hut 8 bought the site in July 2024 and announced its first power-up at the end of June 2025: a 162,000-square-foot building with 205 megawatts of capacity at full power. It draws power behind the meter from an adjacent wind farm and through a connection to the ERCOT grid, and is cooled by a closed loop of 120,000 gallons of glycol-water solution. Bitmain is the customer for the whole deployment of about 17,280 mining servers under a colocation agreement, which Hut 8 expects to bring $110 million to $120 million a year in revenue.

Fortune visited in January 2026 and described the building as the length of five football fields, next to wind turbines that power it up to 45% of the time. Eric Trump, whose American Bitcoin buys machines from the site under the same agreement, visited in November 2025 by Secret Service motorcade, to a town of fewer than 1,000 people. It was "kept very, very quiet," said Quincy Taylor, a county commissioner who also owns Vega's only grocery store and edits the town's newspaper. American Bitcoin, which says it has only five employees, does not own or operate the building; it pays Hut 8 to run it. "It's going to provide some jobs for a rural area that doesn't always have jobs," said Kari Mays, Vega's assistant city secretary.
