Iron County approved its first big data center just after pausing all new ones. On June 4, 2026, the county Planning Commission unanimously granted a conditional use permit to Pronghorn Development LLC for the Antelope Data Center, on about 640 acres along Antelope Springs Road west of Cedar City: up to five buildings and an on-site natural gas plant of up to 1.5 gigawatts, built over 8 to 10 years, St. George News reported. KSL put its built-out value at an estimated $30 billion.

About 350 people came to a March hearing, many worried about water in the fully allocated Escalante Valley basin; the developer's documents projected a closed-loop system with a one-time fill of about 2.6 million gallons and about 3.13 acre-feet a year after that. The permit carries 62 conditions. "This thing has more conditions of approval than probably everything that's ever gone through this commission combined," said commissioner Dennis Gray. Zoning administrator Terry Palmer said officials had little choice: "as long as they can satisfy our ordinance, then yes, the Planning Commission has limited discretion." After the vote, attendees held up paper plates reading "appeal."

In late May the county commission barred processing of new or incomplete data center, data center power plant and solar applications for 180 days, but Antelope's application had already been deemed complete and is vested under the old rules, county planner Brett Hamilton said. A second project, BrightNight's Red Butte Energy and Data Center Campus, is planned on private land about 7 miles northeast of Newcastle to grow from 300 megawatts to as much as 1.5 gigawatts with gas, solar and battery storage on a footprint of about 2,600 acres.

"Ultimately, we've got to find a customer that wants to build their facilities here," said BrightNight's Erik Ellis. Residents raised concerns at its May open house in Cedar City, which The Salt Lake Tribune headlined as facing "overwhelming opposition from locals." In September the county was drafting a new ordinance for data centers, gas plants, solar and battery storage.
