Data centers in Utah: 18 projects mapped
Utah's biggest data center fight is over the Stratos Project in Box Elder County, a campus backed by Kevin O'Leary on more than 20,000 acres beside the Great Salt Lake that would use 9 gigawatts of electricity at full build. A state development authority and the county commissioners approved it this spring. Residents asked to put it to a public vote, the county refused, and their group, BEAR, has appealed in the 1st District Court in Brigham City; the county and O'Leary asked a judge in August to dismiss the appeal, and no ruling has been published.
More than 1,000 people came to the county fairgrounds in Tremonton in May when the commissioners took up the project. The political cost followed: in June, Senate President Stuart Adams, who chairs the development authority, lost his primary, and so did the two Box Elder commissioners on the ballot. "The commissioners, the Senate, the House, will they get the message after Tuesday that we don't want it?" said Brenna Williams, a BEAR organizer.

Near Mona in Juab County, a $10 billion, 3 million-square-foot campus, Nebo North LLC, won a county permit at an April 15 hearing that lasted four minutes with no one from the public there. Neighbor Taylor Flake learned of it when a gas company asked to run a pipeline across his ranch, and his group, Mona Cares, has asked the county commission to reverse the permit. In Millard County, Joule and Creekstone plan two large campuses that will make their own power, and in Iron County the planning commission approved Pronghorn Development's Project Antelope in June.
Towns and counties are pausing new data centers: Iron, Box Elder, Cache, Grand and Wayne counties, Logan, Milford and, on September 8, Clearfield have moratoriums, though Box Elder's does not reach Stratos. Meta announced another expansion of its Eagle Mountain campus in September. The Legislature meets in January, when lawmakers plan data center bills.
