Oracle's data center at 6136 West 10120 South in West Jordan, in Salt Lake County, Utah, has run since 2012 after a stop-start build that the state and city helped pay for. The Governor's Office of Economic Development board awarded a state tax rebate of more than $15 million, and the city added nearly $10 million through an economic development area that paid back part of the new property tax over several years to cover land and site work.

Oracle broke ground in October 2008 on what it called the Utah Compute Center, a 179,000 square foot, 285 million dollar building promised with about 100 jobs at wages more than double the county median. The site sat idle for a year. Oracle stopped work in the spring of 2009 while it was buying Sun Microsystems, whose data centers in Colorado and Las Vegas gave it the option to buy capacity rather than build it, and state officials said the company had put the project on hold for a little while. Construction resumed in the spring of 2010 under the name Project Sequoia, and the building came online in 2012. In 2016 Oracle added a 40,000 square foot section, Cells 2.1 and 2.2, with a multi-level plenum cooling system that its structural engineers, Salas O'Brien, said cut energy and water use in the city's desert climate. State officials projected $73.6 million in new wages over 10 years and $50.4 million in new state revenue over 12.

West Jordan went after a much larger data center four years later, on a different site. In August 2016 the city courted a project code-named Discus, widely taken to be Facebook, on 232 acres between 9000 South and Old Bingham Highway, which would have drawn 180 megawatts and about 5.3 million gallons of water a day. Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams and the county council voted against the city's $250 million incentive offer, objecting to the tax breaks for 70 to 130 jobs and to a commitment of 4.8 million gallons of water a day, and the state school board capped its share at $100 million. A competing bid from Los Lunas, New Mexico offered a full property tax abatement for 30 years.

The city still wants the industry. An economic development plan presented to the West Jordan City Council on June 24, 2025 lists data centers among the preferred uses for several of its redevelopment areas, while naming their heavy energy use as a weakness and finite resources and the city's dependence on Rocky Mountain Power and Dominion as threats.
