AWS Wallula Gap data center, Burbank, Washington

Amazon Data Services has proposed a data center campus at the Port of Walla Walla's Wallula Gap Business Park in Burbank, an unincorporated community in Walla Walla County, Washington. The company filed plans in May 2026 for what it calls the Attalia Data Center Campus, and the county ruled the application substantially complete on August 24, 2026. The first phase covers a 134 acre parcel and calls for three 220,000 square foot buildings, an industrial water facility and a pad for a future electrical substation.

Amazon held a public open house on August 11, 2026, at Columbia High School in Burbank, and the atrium filled with attendees, many wearing shirts opposing data centers. Roger Wehner, Amazon's vice president of economic development, told the crowd that any major industrial project should draw questions, and that “we need to have this broader conversation.” Kennewick resident Bonnie Wescott compared the pace to the region's history with the Hanford nuclear site: “They went into Hanford real quickly and didn't have all the information.”

Daniel Brown, a Walla Walla protestor at the open house, said, “There's multiple sides to this story, not just what Amazon says.” Amazon told the crowd the campus would use water equal to about 6 percent of the site's annual allocation, roughly a quarter of what local agriculture uses on the same acreage. Port officials have said the project would grow the county's tax base by half as it is built out over four phases.

Public comment on the permit is open until 5 p.m. on October 12, 2026. After that, Walla Walla County's Community Development Department will issue a threshold decision on whether the project needs a full environmental impact statement, opening a second comment period before the county makes its final call on the application.
