CyrusOne Milan (MIL1) data center, Segrate, Lombardy

CyrusOne broke ground in March 2026 on MIL1, its first Italian data center, under construction on Via Reggio Emilia in the Redecesio area of Segrate, a town just east of Milan. The Dallas-based developer says the three-story building will deliver 27 megawatts of power in three 9-megawatt sections, with the first nine megawatts running by the third quarter of 2027.

The site is the former Cise research center, empty since 2003 and used for years as a shelter by homeless people; about 50 old buildings were demolished before construction began. Italy's environment ministry screened the project's backup generators and has since reviewed CyrusOne's compliance with its conditions, most recently in June 2026.

As part of the deal, CyrusOne bought a 658,628-square-meter farmland plot known as the Golfo Agricolo and gave it to the town, which had long fought to keep it undeveloped. "This is an important day for all of us in Segrate. At last, the Golfo Agricolo is ours," Mayor Paolo Micheli said in 2024.

CyrusOne is spending more than 6 million euros on local roads, including turning Via delle Regioni into a boulevard with cycle paths, and plans solar panels on public school buildings. The groundbreaking set off weeks of debate on local social media during the town's spring 2026 election campaign, the Giornale di Segrate reported.

Answering residents' questions in that paper, CyrusOne said about 150 trees removed for the project would be replaced with 170 new ones, and that its closed-loop cooling system uses no continuous daily water after the first fill. CyrusOne also plans a second, 54-megawatt Milan data center, MIL2, near Linate Airport, drawing power from the same expanded electricity substation.
