Envision Galaxy Ulanqab data center, Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia

Envision Group's Galaxy Campus, an AI data center in Ulanqab in China's Inner Mongolia, entered operation on August 6, 2026, with a planned total capacity of 2 gigawatts. Envision, a Chinese green technology company, describes it as the world's largest single AI computing facility: 120,000 square meters, roughly 20 football fields, built to run 1 million GPUs in parallel. Ulanqab is about 240 kilometers from Beijing in a straight line, Global Times reported, while the Chinese outlet Huxiu put the distance at about 320 kilometers.

Global Times reported the project launches Envision's "Mission Gobi" initiative, which the company says targets 5 gigawatts of green computing capacity in desert regions worldwide by 2030.

Global Times reported that the campus relies on directly connected green electricity for more than 80 percent of its power. Electricity for data centers in Ulanqab costs about 50 percent less than in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Global Times reported, and the area gets more than 3,200 hours of sunshine a year. Qbitai, a Chinese technology outlet, put the wider region's green-power share at 67 percent.

Huxiu reported the city had about 109 committed data center projects by August 2026, with total committed computing capacity rising from roughly 3.3 gigawatts a year earlier to about 12.5 gigawatts. Huxiu also reported the city signed 12 new smart-computing projects worth more than 130 billion yuan in August 2026 alone. Huxiu reported that DeepSeek plans about 1 gigawatt of data center capacity in Ulanqab. Global Times reported that Huawei, Alibaba and Apple have also set up computing operations in the area, citing the region's cheap electricity. Huxiu reported that GPU utilization at China's smart-computing centers nationally averages below 30 percent, and that officials have acknowledged such projects remain unprofitable during this investment phase.
