Google opened its Jakarta cloud region, its Google Cloud data center presence in Indonesia's capital, on June 24, 2020, with three zones. Google says it was the first major cloud provider to launch a cloud region in Indonesia. In May 2025 Google said it was still expanding the region's computing capacity to meet demand, without saying by how much.

Indonesian customers had used Google's cloud regions in Singapore and Sydney before Jakarta opened. XL Axiata's chief information and digital officer, Yessie Yosetya, said at the launch that having the infrastructure at home would let the telecom company meet data compliance rules and manage its latency needs. Google says the region added the equivalent of 55 billion dollars in economic value to Indonesia over its first five years and expects to add about 88 billion dollars more over the next five.

Demand for data centers in Indonesia is growing fast; nearly 200 facilities were operating across the country by March 2026, according to IDNFinancials. Indonesia's Ministry of Investment says it is offering special regulatory treatment and incentives to attract more investment, modeled on the Nongsa Digital Park special economic zone in Batam.
