Vantage VA3 (Ashburn III) data center, Ashburn, Virginia

Vantage Data Centers is building its VA3 campus on 134 acres at 19509 Belmont Ridge Road in Ashburn, in Loudoun County, Virginia, and now advertises seven buildings there. It bought the land in 2022 for $180 million from Barcroft Associates, an entity controlled by Charles B. DeLashmutt, and gives the finished campus 2.3 million square feet and 288 megawatts of power.

The county's board of supervisors voted 7-1 in September 2026 to pause new data center applications for 12 months, and county staff are due to bring a formal resolution on the pause to the board on October 20, 2026. The pause took effect immediately; the county had already removed data centers as a by-right zoning option and is exploring removing by-right status from projects that were grandfathered in.

The Army Corps of Engineers received a joint federal and state permit application for the site in early 2023, covering ground west of Belmont Ridge Road and south of Harry Byrd Highway. The filing said the work would affect just over two acres of wetlands and 3,551 linear feet of stream channel, which Vantage proposed to offset by buying wetland credits from the Northern Virginia Stream Restoration Bank and stream credits from The Nature Conservancy of Virginia.

The site plan filed with it showed four buildings and a substation, three fewer buildings than the company now lists. Cooling is a closed-loop chilled water system fed by air-cooled chillers with economizer capability, which Vantage says brings water use to near zero liters per kilowatt hour.

Dominion, the local utility, is spending $50.1 billion on capital projects between 2025 and 2029, including the Golden to Mars 500/230 kilovolt transmission line and the Evergreen Mills project, both of which run through this area. Michael Turner, vice chair of the county board's transportation and land use committee, counted 199 data centers operating in Loudoun with another 117 in development.
