EdgeConneX data centers: 7 sites mapped

EdgeConneX, a data center developer owned by the investment firm EQT, ran into organized opposition on two of its largest 2026 proposals. In Douglas County, Georgia, commissioners voted 4-1 in early July to deny a rezoning for a five-building, roughly 700-acre campus near Villa Rica, after the county planning commission had recommended denial. One resident told commissioners, "We already have 11 data centers. That's ridiculous!"

Commissioner Mark Alcarez, whose district includes the site, voted against the rezoning but noted the county's budget needs: "We are 25 years behind in our road infrastructure. That money has got to come from somewhere." Supporters had pointed to a projected 200 to 300 permanent jobs; it is not known whether the developer will return with a modified plan.

In the Village of Ashville, Ohio, EdgeConneX planned a 680-acre campus with a 1.8-gigawatt substation. After the village council adopted a term summary with the company in April 2026 that would have exempted the project from an existing moratorium, resident Laura McNamara-Smith and others petitioned for a referendum; the Ohio Supreme Court ordered it placed before the Pickaway County Board of Elections.

On August 24, 2026, the board voted unanimously to put the referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot for village voters. The Circleville Herald noted the ballot question is on the council's resolution itself, not a direct vote for or against the data center.
