Data centers in Iceland: 4 projects mapped

Iceland's data centers run on hydro and geothermal power, and the biggest are near Keflavík airport and in the north. atNorth runs ICE02 near Keflavík with 83 megawatts of power, ICE01 in Hafnarfjörður and ICE03 in Akureyri; Verne's campus on a former NATO base near Keflavík hosts a 10-megawatt Nebius AI cluster; and Borealis runs a 50-megawatt campus at Blönduós. In July 2026 the national power company Landsvirkjun agreed to sell Borealis another 12 megawatts to expand Blönduós for AI computing.

Operators say they have moved from bitcoin mining to AI. "Cryptomining has a bad reputation, and people say that renewable energy should not be used for mining," Blönduós mayor Pétur Arason told DCD. Conservation groups want to know what the power is used for. "We don't like that they are building these data centres and using more energy, and we don't know what the data centres are used for," Björg Eva Erlendsdóttir of Landvernd told the Reykjavík Grapevine. Árni Finnsson of the Icelandic Nature Conservation Association said: "The transparency is nil."

Data centers use about 70 megawatts, around 3.5 percent of Iceland's electricity, Landsvirkjun says. The grid is closed, and it has run short before: Landsvirkjun once cut power to data centers, aluminum smelters and fish-meal plants when its reservoirs ran low.
