Hafnarfjörður has Iceland's oldest dedicated data center. The atNorth facility on Steinhella began as Thor Data Center, formally opened in Hafnarfjörður as the first specialized Icelandic data center, with the Norwegian software company Opera as its largest customer, the local paper Fjarðarfréttir reported. Through a later chain of owners it became part of Advania Data Centers, which renamed itself atNorth in December 2020. DCD lists the site as atNorth's 3.2MW ICE01. In an interview with Fjarðarfréttir, atNorth chief executive Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, a Hafnarfjörður native, said the roughly 2,600-square-metre building was essentially full, with space held for a European bank, and that there were no plans to expand it. Because the site is small, atNorth has to buy its power through the distributor HS Veitur rather than directly from the national grid operator Landsnet, which raises the price considerably, he said. He called that the "Achilles heel" of a location in a green neighbourhood. He said no bitcoin mining happens there, because it would never pay there, though it can still pay at the larger Reykjanesbær site. The company's growth has instead gone to its much larger campuses at Reykjanesbær and Akureyri.
Those campuses are where Iceland's data center boom is happening. atNorth said in November 2024 that it was investing 41.2 billion krónur in expanding them, with customers adding nearly 300 billion krónur of equipment, mbl.is reported. In September 2026, Iceland Review noted, atNorth changed hands in a $4 billion deal, days after Statistics Iceland reported that data-center-related investment had reached a record high even as GDP contracted. Iceland's industry spent years dominated by crypto mining; a 2018 KPMG report found 90 percent of the country's data center capacity mined crypto. atNorth told DCD it was no longer taking new crypto customers.
