Data centers in Bartholomew County, Indiana: 1 project mapped
No large data center has been proposed in Bartholomew County, and local governments are tightening the rules before one is. Columbus has a few small data centers, among them DartPoints' building south of downtown, which serves mostly local customers and houses some of the city's computer systems. The County Plan Commission was scheduled to consider requiring special approval for data centers on rural industrial land at its September meeting; no result has been published.
DartPoints, a Dallas company that has owned the Columbus building since 2021, says it uses a little over one megawatt of power today and is adding liquid cooling to reach close to 10 megawatts by the end of 2027. CEO Scott Willis said he does not expect the upgrade to bring many new jobs.
On July 8, 2026, the Columbus City Council voted unanimously to make data centers a conditional use in commercial, public and industrial districts, so any new one needs approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals after a public hearing. In August the County Commissioners asked the county attorney and planners to report on further steps, including a moratorium, stricter rules or a total ban. They said the only rural sites that could take a large data center are in the county's northwestern corner.
