Data centers in Shelby County, Indiana: 1 project mapped

Shelbyville's Common Council approved a Prologis data center campus on April 6, 2026, against its own Plan Commission's advice, in a meeting moved to the high school auditorium to fit the crowd. The project annexes about 575 acres at the State Road 44/I-74 interchange for up to 11 buildings; no tenant has been named. In exchange for at least $2 billion in spending and 25 jobs per building, the council also approved a 30-year full tax abatement on equipment and a 10-year half abatement on real property.

The Plan Commission had recommended against the rezoning in January, and hundreds of residents packed a hearing to protest, warning about farmland loss and water use. Connie Lindsay, who organized Shelbyville Citizens Against Data Centers, said more than 6,700 people had signed the group's petition. "The environmental issues, health and safety issues, we're losing valuable farm ground," she told WRTV. The council's final vote, 4-2-1, went ahead anyway; one member abstained because his law firm represents Prologis.

Separately, Shelby County commissioners adopted a six-month moratorium on data centers in unincorporated parts of the county while a separate ordinance was drafted; it does not apply to the annexed Prologis site. The county's plan commission aimed to send its recommendation in time for a commissioners' vote before the moratorium expired: the vote was scheduled for August 23, 2026, and no result has been published.
