Data centers in Carver County, Minnesota: 1 project mapped

Carver County's data centers are in Chaska, where the city's own municipal electric utility is a draw for operators. The city already has a UnitedHealth Group data center and two Stream buildings; the new proposal is CloudHQ's roughly $1 billion, 1.4-million-square-foot campus on about 70 acres, with up to 180 megawatts of power and 75 to 100 jobs. Chaska's City Council gave it preliminary approval 4-1 on October 21, 2024, over objections from the neighboring Clover Ridge neighborhood.

"This is the largest economic development project we will ever see," Mayor Mark Windschitl said, while resident Susan Nelson said it "will impact my quality of life" and "decrease our property values." The city expects the project to use up to 1.5 million gallons of groundwater a day at peak; CloudHQ says it will use air-based chillers and signed no nondisclosure agreements. A new substation would connect directly to Xcel Energy's transmission line, pending a system impact study.

CloudHQ had not applied for final city approval as of the most recent public update. Elsewhere in the county, the city of Carver adopted its own one-year moratorium on new data centers on April 11, 2026, running through April 2027.
