A Goodhue County judge has stopped work on Google's data center in Pine Island. On May 22, 2026, District Judge Patrick M. Biren issued a temporary restraining order barring developer Ryan Companies from any construction at Project Skyway, a 482-acre technology park on the edge of the town of about 4,000 people. He also rejected the city's and developer's bid for summary judgment. No hearing or ruling has been reported since.

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy sued, arguing the city's 2025 environmental review was "insufficient and illegal" because officials already knew a large Google data center was coming and needed a fuller study of the project's effects. The judge found the group had made "a showing of possible success on the merits." Ryan estimated in court that the delay could cost it $5 million or more.

Pine Island approved a conditional use permit, a zoning approval, in January and, on Feb. 4, a package that abates $36 million in property taxes over up to 28 years while still expecting about $131 million in new property taxes and $27 million more from the developer; Google separately pledged $25 million to Pine Island's schools. Mayor David Friese said the worst case is the legal process "pushing the project out" to 2027.
