Data centers in Beaver County, Pennsylvania: 4 projects mapped
In September 2026, Aligned Data Centers broke ground on a data center campus designed for 2,000 megawatts of power - enough for a small city - in Shippingport, a Beaver County borough of about 160 people, on the site of the closed Bruce Mansfield coal plant. Aligned closed on 650.89 acres of the industrial park for about $223 million. The company says the three-building campus, called Project Phoenix, will run on its own on-site natural gas generators rather than drawing from the regional power grid, and expects about 3,000 construction jobs and 640 permanent ones.
Shippingport saw it coming: the borough passed a data center ordinance in March 2025, months before anyone knew who was interested. Residents found out when some got notices about seismic testing for blasting at the site. "Someone jumped the gun," emergency coordinator Pat Lampe said. Aligned filed its application in December 2025, and the council approved it in January 2026 after residents raised concerns about property values and landslides on hilly, mined-out ground.

Downriver, a company called Big Digital Energy - formerly Mawson Infrastructure Group - runs about 100 megawatts of cryptocurrency mining in Midland, on part of the old ATI Allegheny Ludlum steel site, under a power deal with the Beaver Valley nuclear plant's owner. Nearby, Fezzik Energy is trying to bring a similarly sized data center to the old J&L Steel site in Midland, and Switch has proposed a data center on a former racetrack in Big Beaver. Aliquippa's mayor, Dwan Walker, described the early stage of such deals: "In the beginning, you're cloak and dagger."
A Vistra subsidiary has also paid $4.2 million - more than ten times the assessed value - for a 74-acre farm near the Beaver Valley nuclear plant in Hookstown, and has not said what it plans to build there.
